How do you narrow your audience? 5 tips to help you find your tribe.

Hey there, coaches and creators! Let's talk audience. Common wisdom tells us that the greater the pool, the better the opportunity. In our case, it just isn’t true. It’s one of those “less is more” things. The more you try to talk to everyone, the more you connect with no one. So, how do you narrow your audience? How do you find your tribe?

  1. Identify Your Niche Focus
Think about the unique problems you solve. Who benefits most from your skills, knowledge, and passion? Stay-at-home moms, people training for marathons, people with a specific ailment? For example, if you’re a fitness coach, maybe you’re also a single mom with MS. You can speak to that audience with greater conviction and relevance. They’ll see you, identify with you, and connect with you much easier than they would with a twenty-something fitness guru.
  2. Define Who You Do and Do Not Want to Work With

Who do you love working with? Seriously, think of that one client or follower...

Let's Talk About Failure: When Does a Project Become a Failure and How Do You Handle It If It Does?

I've recognized a pattern in my business: in the past, when I hit a wall, I let it derail me. I’ve failed enough times to fill an entire journal. Looking back, most of the initiatives I started could have succeeded to some degree if I had just kept going. The problem was, I saw obstacles as stopping points instead of part of the process.

Here’s what I’ve learned: it’s only a failure if you 1. Stop and 2. Define it as a failure.

Let me share a story. When my daughter was a baby, I invented a baby product. I created a prototype, filed a provisional patent, manufactured it overseas, developed branding, packaging, and marketing, connected with mom bloggers, had it safety tested, and even set up at a national trade show in Las Vegas. There, I met Babies R Us executives, and they bought my product for their online store. Huge win, right? Sales were okay—not amazing, but I was selling on BabiesRUs.com!

But then I decided I needed a distributor. Why? I still...

Questioning My Own Bullshit: The Accountability Partner Experiment

Whenever the idea of an accountability partner came up, I always poo poo’d it. Every book you read recommends it, but for whatever reason, I always felt that wasn't for me. I guess I thought I didn’t need it. I could do it all on my own, right?

But recently, I decided to question my own bullshit. I thought, why not give it a try? Perhaps every book ever written on productivity and goals has a point? So, I reached out, found a partner, and we’ve committed to meeting weekly. Our first meeting was productive—we both gave each other some valuable insight, and it felt like we were really onto something.

Here’s our plan going forward to make sure this partnership is a win for both of us:

  1. Setting Clear Goals: We’re not being vague—we’re getting specific about what we want to achieve and why it matters. This helps both of us understand what we’re aiming for and how we can hold each other accountable.
  2. Regular Check-ins: We’re...

How to Use ChatGPT for Content Creation: Pro Tips and Hacks

Hey there, creators and coaches! If you’re in the content creation game, you’ve likely heard about ChatGPT and the impact it can have. ChatGPT can be a serious game-changer for getting ideas flowing, finding the right words, and even cutting down on those time-sucking brainstorming sessions. But like any tool, it’s all about how you use it. Today, I’m sharing some pro tips and practical ways to make ChatGPT work for you.

1. Start with a Clear Prompt – Get Specific!
When you’re using ChatGPT, the more specific you are with your prompts, the better your results will be. If you’re looking for social media post ideas, instead of just typing “give me post ideas,” try: “Give me five engaging social media post ideas for a wellness coach focused on stress management.” The more context and detail you add, the more tailored and useful the output will be. Think of it as guiding a friend – the clearer you are, the...

5 Easy Online Tools to Help You Generate Content Idea

Do you get stuck trying to figure out content ideas? Do you want to continually engage with your audience but when you sit down to do it, your brain is like the Sahara? I’ve put together 5 of my “go to” solutions for writer eh creator block.

#1 – Google – Duh
Yeah, I know but hear me out. Not just google but a specific place on Google. Put your topic in and scroll about 2/3 of the way down the page and you’ll see “People also ask”. That little list is a great place to start. You can take these simple questions and create a blog, a video or a tutorial on your subject.

# 2 – The Kajabi Course Outline Generator
This thing is pretty new, and I found it very impressive. You throw your topic in and wait a minute and POOF, outcomes an entire course outline. Review your newly constructed outline and see if that prompts some ideas.

How do I start to build my audience for my online course or membership?

I’ve built my course but sales are lackluster, well actually, abysmal. First, deep breath. It’s ok. This is more common than what others will lead you to believe. Sure, you think everyone’s making $10k, $20k, $50k per month.  I can promise you, they are not. Don’t get me wrong, of course there are success stories and you can be one of them but unless you already have a huge following, you won’t start out with the money rolling in.

Now that we’ve come to terms with reality, what do we do? Yes, you can work on your sales page, the copy, the SEO, do ads, etc. All of this is important and will come into play in time. But, you know what’s really important?  You! Do people know you? Do they hear your voice? Do they get that you understand their plight? If not, it’s time to let them get to know you.

Step 1:  Lurk and Listen

Now in order to implement step 1, Lurk and Listen, you’ll need to have previously...

Online Course Creation: 3 things you need and the 1 you don't

So you’re thinking about creating an online course or membership – fantastic!  You’ve got what it takes.  You’re a subject matter expert, you have the credentials and the experience.  Heck you  may have even written a book or taught courses. If you could just get an online course put together, it will sell like hotcakes. (Does anyone say that anymore?)

I’ve been around this block and I have seen a few people have ridiculous success but most crash and burn. Here are my top 3 tips on what you NEED to do to make money with your online course or membership and the 1 thing you DO NOT NEED.

NEED

1. Define your audience.

I can not stress this enough. You can’t speak to the entire universe.  Well, you can try but I promise you, no one’s gonna listen. If you are a parenting coach, don’t start out trying to help every parent. Speak to those that want to listen. Maybe you have experience with...

Identify Your Ideal Client and Create Your Client Avatar

When we are starting out in our business, we tend to want to serve as large of an audience as possible. In many cases, when we try to do this, we end up with a watered down solution that doesn't really help anyone. But, what's the alternative? Do we narrow down our audience and potentially alienate customers (and revenue)? Believe it or not, the less is more adage really does work, especially in the online world.  The more specifically you speak to someone's situation, the more likely they will be to connect with you and ultimately buy from you.

If you're a chef and you want to appeal to families, perhaps you create a yummy recipe for mac and cheese. Well, unless your Rachel Ray or Rachel Ray recommends you, chances are very few people will see or notice your mac and cheese recipe. But, if your vegan and you are speaking directly to vegan moms with young children and you post your delicious recipe in a forum of other busy, vegan moms of young children, well, now...
